About P'anne . . .
Phyllis (phyllis anne or p'anne), was born and grew up in the midwest, creating art at an early age. Later, traveling solo throughout the United States in a Volkswagen convertible, she studied art, drama and psychology in three universities. Ever curious, she studied human nature, and earned a master's degree in Counseling Psychology from Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, CA.
Later. Ms. Jenkins owned a counseling clinic leading to conference tours, as a speaker and then to teaching professionals worldwide. Concurrently, Phyllis founded a studio-gallery, then moved on to create and show her work at The Alameda ArtWorks in San Jose. Her works have been curated into exhibitions throughout the United States and three galleries in California
In 2024, Phyllis moved her main studio to the Zhou-B Arts Center (ZBAC) in Kansas City, MO. Also in 2024, she won a fellowship with Artist, INC., Kansas City, MO, which focuses artists from widely divergent industries in a team approach exploring expansive ways to embody work that help the community as well as creating business success that ensures the work continues into the future.
Phyllis uses color, shape and texture to create abstractions and/or figures that transform experiences and emotions into arresting visual images that capture the imagination. She says art and psychology come together in how both excavate the soul. Ms. Jenkins explores that excavation in worlds created out of chaos and serenity, isolation and connection, constraint and freedom. She is interested in evoking energetic and emotional responses in works that speak to and validate the ways we contain ourselves yet long for freedom.
Thoughts. Experiences. Inspiration.
I draw and paint to satisfy some primal urge to leave my mark. I think that is the raw basis for why I am drawn so passionately to create visual images on a multitude of substrates (wood, paper, canvas). It’s logical. Humankind has been leaving marks behind as far back as recorded time – on walls of caves, sides of rocks, etc. I think that’s my ‘why’; just basic. Why everybody doesn’t do this and I do, I do not know. Maybe they do. Maybe everyone leaves ‘their mark’ in other ways: writing poetry, making music, building tall buildings and so on. My way is painted images.
What I create, mainly figures and abstractions, are excavations into the soul; it’s really soul work. I dream it, envision it, breathe into it when I’m at the canvas edge. It’s always edgy. I am never sure my intended image can be done, at least by me. I’m very humble when I begin. I know I might not pull it off. Sometimes it feels too revealing, too raw, to put it out there. I put it out anyway. Because I have to move on or I would be endlessly redoing work. The more I do this work, the closer I edge toward my vision. The better I know myself. There is no perfection in me. I just keep learning and growing. My work reflects that. I think that’s why people resonate with my artwork
